New Books for the Very Young

We've been reporting on book arrivals for adults and young adults so now it's time to let you know about recent arrivals for the much younger readers. Recent additions (descriptions compliments of Nathan and amazon.com) include:

"And the Dish Ran Away With the Spoon" (new twist on an old story) by Janet Stevens, Children (grades 1-2), 40 pages with wonderful illustrations. Every night the rhyme gets read. Every night Dish and Spoon run away. And every night they return--until tonight! Where can Dish and Spoon be? The rhyme can't go on without them, so Cat, Cow, and Dog set out to search for their missing friends. But where to start? Should they go north? East? Northeast? They'll just have to read Fork's map, ask directions, and try not to get lost in Little Boy Blue's haystack or under Miss Muffet's tuffet or in Big Bad Wolf's kitchen--"FEE, FI, FO . . ." Oh no. Could that be the giant?

"Kitten's First Full Moon" by Kevin Henkes, Children's (preschool), 32 pages with illustrations, Caldecott Medal Winner.

What a night!
The moon is full.
Kitten is hungry
and inquisitive
and brave
and fast
and persistent
and unlucky . . . then lucky!
What a night!

Reminder -- The annual Children's Easter Party is coming up this Saturday, March 26th from 10:30 AM to 12 noon at the Mammoth Lakes Library. Bring in your little bunnies for a hopping good time! We'll have stories, games, refreshments and special treats. Plus, the Easter Bunny will be stopping by so come on in for photos! Call the Library at 934-4777 for more information.

Wow! Two nights in a row recently our library's meeting room/reading area has been filled to capacity! There were over 25 people in for the first sign language class, then 38 people the next evening at Rick Jali's slideshow of Patagonia. Yes, yes, yes! We really do need a new library!

TRIVIA QUESTION OF THE WEEK: If you think that library fines are unpleasant, wait until you read the following Curse Against Book Stealers. Do you know where it came from? Hint: It's not from the USA! "For him that stealeth a Book from this Library, let it change into a serpent in his hand and rend him. Let him be struck with Palsy, and all his Members blasted. Let him languish in Pain crying aloud for Mercy and let there be no surcease to his Agony till he sink in Dissolution. Let Bookworms gnaw his Entrails in token of the Worm that dieth not, and when at last he goeth to his final Punishment, let the flames of Hell consume him for ever and aye."
ANSWER TO LAST WEEK'S QUESTION: Who said, "Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." .........Groucho Marx
