Popular Class to Continue!
The free sign language classes that have been held at the Mammoth Lakes Library will continue, following a week of uncertainty. The original instructor, Lucy Wooten, moved out of the area after teaching several of the classes. New instructors have been found, and the classes will continue meeting every Tuesday at 5:30 PM at the Mammoth Lakes Library. Our new teacher will be Carol Felt, who works for the library as the Early Literacy Specialist. She is fluent in sign, and has agreed to volunteer to teach the classes at least until early May, at which point Rocky Scholl has offered to take up the reigns. The library wants to thank Carol and Rocky, as well at the steadfast students in the class, for keeping sign alive at the library! To summarize, the sign language classes will continue. The classes are held every Tuesday night at 5:30 PM at the Mammoth Lakes Library, 960 Forest Trail. For more information, call the library at 934-4777.
Since 9/11, the religion of Islam has been the focus of confusion, paranoia, and in some cases, bigotry. In order to help educate the public, a major educational initiative was launched in September 2002 by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a national civil rights and advocacy group, to educate the American public about Islam and to counter anti-Muslim bigotry. The year long campaign, called ?Explore Islamic Civilization and Culture,? involves the community sponsored distribution of books, videos and audio cassettes about Islam and Muslims to some 7500 public libraries nationwide. As part of this, the library has received a free, multiple item resource package for use within Mono County which includes:
