What's Happening!

From the latest Mono County Friends of Library Newsletter:

Antelope Valley

Coleville has held two book sales so far this year in the spring.  We are planning two more at community events, which are the Fall Festival (Chamber roadside flea market) and the Women's Club Bazaar, held Veteran's Day weekend in November.  We have helped cover books, shelve, and log in the new large print books.  We just started the chapter in the Antelope Valley in February 2007 after several years with no chapter.  There is an active group of about fifteen members.

We have worked with the Antelope Valley Artists group to hang original art in the library, changing the exhibit every four or five months.

Bridgeport Chapter

We have a wonderful new Librarian, Abby Bridges .  She's a great addition to our little library. Recently, Abby was able to conjure up some shelving for the Historical Section of the Library and it is a great spot to store and display local history. June 27 we hosted Teddy Bear Nights with story time, movie and snacks for the young children and moms—we had a total of 13! It was great!!

Our July 4th Used Book Sale was very successful, making about $3500. It will be put to good use (one right away to pay for the Nortington Books, that as a rule, we rent and return--they have a new deal that we can purchase more books, rather than return them. On August 15 th we had Evening at the Library with Bridgeport resident, Mark Klitsie, who did a presentation on the straw bale house he is building at Twin Lakes .

On September 1 st we hosted two performances by historical actress, Terri Geissinger. She portrayed Eleanor Dumont, aka Madame Moustache of Bodie. 85 people attended!! Our committee has some plans for early Spring next year.  We want to create a Zen Garden , with pretty rocks and plants, as well as a new Red Oak tree.  We will spruce up the existing tree's bed area with pretty spring flowers.  We had hoped to start it this year, but as you know, our growing season here in Bridgeport is about 2 months long and it's already starting to freeze at night!

Crowley Chapter

Our annual 4th of July Book Sale was a great success this year due to the organizational skills of Mrs. Leslie Goodrich and a small band of hard-working volunteers. Leslie moved the event indoors to the Crowley Community Center , which was a boon to the many book browsers on a very hot July day. Help from the Mammoth Friends of the Library and the Mammoth Lakes Book Chalet was greatly appreciated. On August 23 the Crowley Friends of the Library granted a life membership to Mrs. Suzanne Felkel for her efforts as the first Crowley librarian, and the founding of the Felkel Regional Collection to honor the memory of Mr. Richard Felkel. The Felkel Regional Collection now numbers 59 books covering all aspects of the High Sierra and Great Basin . Additional books are on order and we hope to dedicate the collection this year, making it available to the public.

June Lake Chapter

Additional large print and other books have been purchased. Using an IBM Grant, a new computer was provided. Just installed a new book cabinet in the Library. Our planned addition of a storage room to the Library is proceeding, waiting for the Public Works to give the finale go ahead. This will give us a 10' by 16' room. Very good book sale made $553.25

Countywide

Verizon gave $5,000 grant which was distributed for large print books to all the Libraries. We gave a children's computer to Crowley Lake this year with a IBM grant.
