Mammoth Lakes Friends of the LibraryWe are a very active group of dedicated volunteers. We are young and old, men and women, full-time residents, second homeowners, students, professionals, and retirees, all with a common goal to support our library. What Do We Do? The Friends volunteer time to help sustain and improve library services, encourage reading and library use, assist with children's reading and story hour programs, and offer our services wherever needed. We conduct many fundraising activities and budget thousands of dollars annually to buy books, books on tape and CD, newspaper and magazine subscriptions, shelving and equipment, and supplies for children's reading program and story hours. We have established an Endowment Fund for Literacy in Mammoth Lakes for materials, staffing, equipment, transportation, general administrative and other support for literacy programs. We are actively involved in the "Mammoth Lakes Library: Building a Model of Excellence" campaign to fund the remaining items needed for our newly opened library at 400 Sierra Park Road. How Do We Raise Funds?Our major activities that benefit the Mammoth Lakes Library include the Book Chalet Used Book Store and Parking Lot Sales over Memorial Day and Labor Day Weekends. The used books sold at these events are donated by the Friends and other members of the community. The funds raised are then reinvested into the library in support of our programs. We also sell Vintage and Rare books at these sales, and throughout the year via the Internet. We establish other fundraising efforts each year. Past efforts have included mystery theatres, raffles, campaign mailings, auctions and gift basket sales. Book ChaletThe Book Chalet is Mammoth’s only used bookstore, sponsored by MLFOL and staffed by volunteers. Located at 645 Old Mammoth Road across the street from The Stove restaurant, the store is open five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday. Our hours are Noon to 4:00 p.m. October 1st to March 31st and Noon to 5:00 p.m. April 1st to September 30th. Please call the store at 924-2593 to make sure that we are open, or to volunteer your time.
