The Mono County Libraries strives to deliver Storytime in a way that aligns with the most current understandings in early childhood development as well as with the best practices encouraged by the California State Library. In this hour, we hope to demonstrate various ways in which we can interact with children’s books that allow for child-led discovery, development and positive experiences with learning.
In conjunction with the Center for Childhood Creativity (CCC) at the Bay Area Discovery Museum, the CA State Library recently published Promising Practices: A Guide for Library Staff. This guide is meant to provide everyday ways for applying the key findings of the CCC’s extensive review of early childhood research, which culminated in Reimagining School Readiness. This research and the guidelines underscore the complexity of how the minds of young children grow and underline the importance of holistic, positive approaches to preparing our children for school. For a brief overview of how these guidelines can play a role in a parent or caregiver’s daily life, check out the flyer in English or in Spanish.
As these recent studies reveal just how critical early childhood experiences are for lifelong learning and building strong emotional and social skills, the Mono County Libraries has adapted the above-mentioned best practices to our own Storytime Curriculum so that we can provide positive examples to our young parents, caregivers and children.
